Concept Piece: Escort Mission - Visual Development

Hello all and welcome to the final installment of my first semester's hard work from Visual Development! In the final Project we had to construct a piece in which we had to include everything from our previous projects into one piece. Now this could be done in several ways, we could make our creature a tattoo design for our hero and however you could interpret it, as long as it was clearly visible in the piece.

For my piece I wanted to make a potential cinematic in my story, A cutscene or a possible mission in a game so my idea was to have my hero, Hans, escort the Boesh Toad (vehicle) and his merchant through Boesh (environment) while protecting him. In the picture I have Hans cleaning his blade after killing Tyramont (creature) and the merchant trying to calm his mount, while unnoticed by them Krex (Character) his behind them waiting to strike from the ruins of my prop design.

Here how i started my process, I quickly sketched several storyboards that fit a couple of ideas in my head they are read from top to bottom, each an idea. I decided to explore the first one:

With a little more work put into these I tried several shots and angles that would work nicely with my idea. The top right one had more potential but it still wasn't quite there yet so i had to push further:

I also did my color studies and loved the top left one so I went with that scheme.

Finally I had what I wanted in the thumbnail and did my rough sketches and final line work along with rendering etc.

Overall there are some things that could be pushed further in this piece but considering the time crunch i was on I think I didn't too bad of a job. I loved this last assignment and can't wait to continue this project next semester! Till then I'll post some of my other work from my other classes. I hope everyone the best for the coming holidays! Cheers!

Boesh Environment - Visual Development

Helllllloooo everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates, but I am proud to present the latest installation to my Vis Dev class and project. We were set out to make an environment of our worlds and had to create site maps and switch with other people. The site map i received was simple enough so from a list emailed to the class we had to pick 3 words that would describe our environment. I had Fantasy, Foggy , and.... F- Dark XD. I wanted to do an environment where my Boesh toad came from and what the people have to live in so I loved the words that i got,  so i set out with some simple thumbnails.

these began simple enough so after pitching them to the teacher I picked 3 of the best and moved to color studies.

After I had these set up I offered them up and together with my professor we both agreed that the middle one was best suited to what i was trying to pull off. Thus began the journey to the final.

Blowing up the image I began with a rough and loose drawing over the shapes, then cleaning the lines well enough to establish what I wanted.

After that i changed the color of the lines see what I drew so when I returned the layer under to it's original opacity, I could overlay and stay true to what I wanted.

Then I made a Color Layer and using the small color study I cleaned up the bigger drawing and laid down the base colors, adjusting the temperature and lighting.

Next, by using just the round brush I rendered EVERYTHING trying to capture what my brain was showing. But their was something I felt missing.

So i put down a new layer and played with my options on the layer, put on a gradient and got a nice atmosphere that i felt was what I was looking for.

This is the final I had to adjust some things in the end and there is a lot that could be worked on this piece but overall I'm pleased with what turned out!

Stay tuned for my last project for this class and then it's on to the next semester! Till then!

Prop Design - Visual Development

The 4th installment to my Vis Dev class. This time were assigned to create a prop that would assist in certain situations that we could choose from a list. here is what was offered:

Assignments
page1image2648
Choose one from the six different situations and design a prop best suited to solve the specific problem.
(A) I need to get through to the other side of this hallway. The only problem is that there is radiation on one side and the other side is underwater.

(B) How can I find out more information about this place? I know that nobody here speaks my language. It just had to start raining to...

(C) Oh no! I have to get this stuff to the top of that point over there. The problem is that there are things in the sky trying to get me.

(D) It is the opening night of a Hit broadway show. Multiple set props have turned up missing. Your team has 6 hours to recreate/substitute the props in the love scene between the two main characters.

(E) Your farms main water source has malfunctioned. Find an alternate way to collect water or this years crops will fail.

(F) Create two unique modes of transportation from everyday junk that might be found in a junkyard or landfill.

I decided to run with option A. My idea for the prop would be a platform unit that could be designed for a video game. The platform would allow the hero to transform his physical body to suit each problem as long as he had the proper materials he collected from a Boss or minion. So for instance he had to go to the underwater part of the room, defeat the Big Bad Fish Boss and use the items he give you to transform into a being that could breathe underwater.

Here are my first sketches:

My teacher decided that I should continue with the middle one, but to add more to it so here are my next   variations for the prop, to make it more stationary and much like a platform:

Next I was given the choice to choose so I picked the bottom one, after making my choice I was asked to turnaround the prop so we could see better inside it and follow up with my color studies:

The top color study was most favored so I worked on the Final:

A bit monochromatic but I was pleased with the overall design, I had to redesign the top part of how the prop worked so its a bit cleaner. Can't wait to post the next one for you all. Hope you enjoyed it!

Creature Design - Visual Development

In this post I present the creature design! In our class we were given a specific animal and were directed to make it not look like it. My animal was the spinosuarus, to begin the process we started out with 15 silhouettes, to which one was selected.

Then after the selected silhouette we moved on to rough sketches and color roughs. I decided to to make my creature look a bunch different ways i used different animals a rhino, tiger, and a dragon. The tiger one i had the most difficultly with.

Rhino version

Tiger version

Dragon

The Purple Dragon one was the most desired and after that was selected we took a new route. Instead of making a turnaround we were to make the skeletal and muscle blueprints of the creature showing how the creature functions.

Then it was on to the final where we made a final design of the creature I tried a new method of painting of the creature. It was very helpful which I shall be practicing more. The link can be found here: http://gorillaartfare.com/illustration/i-tried-thinking-again/. I then gave the creature a name my idea for him is like a raid boss of mini boss in which the hero faces off with.

Hope you enjoyed this project can't wait to post the next one!

Vehicle Design - Visual Development

Well here is the next project we finished in my Visual Development class. Our assignment was to come up with 3 vehicles - Assualt, Scout, and Repair Vehicle. These vehicles had to be in the same universe as our story for the characters we made int the previous project. The process was the same, Silhouettes, roughs, etc. For my designs I made most of them animal or animal-like. We also had to use one word related to our vehicles I was given the word Bioluminescence.

Scouting Vehicle Rough:
my idea was to have a lizard type scouting vehicle to climb up trees and blend into its environment.

Repair Vehicle Rough:
This is my Repair vehicle, my idea was to have a frog/toad type repair vehicle where a merchant would sell potions and items that would aid heroes and animal vehicles on their journey.

Assault Vehicle Rough:
This was the only mechanical one i made. The design was model after a beetle that was used as a siege weapon, my plans for it was to design it much like the way I designed Krex in my story.

Next of course is the color studies of the decided sketch.

Scouting Vehicle Color

Repair Vehicle Color

Assault Vehicle Color

And finally the decided vehicle that gets the full turnaround and rendered version enjoy!
